In October 2001, the Green Council organized the Creative Environmental Friendly Robotics Tournament. By organizing this Tournament has encouraged students to apply their creativity and innovative approaches to environmental protection.
Four briefing sessions were held at various education institutions prior to competition. It was an overwhelming success attracted 160 participating teams from secondary schools and universities. The tournament has generated enthusiastic support from the Education Department, Environment Protection Department, The University of Hong Kong and a number of large corporations in the business and media sectors.
With guests including: Dr. Ian Gibson and Prof. C.F. Lee, The University of Hong Kong, Ms. Mabel Mak, Environmental Protection Department, Miss W N Bau, Education Department and Mrs. Winnie Wong, Kinwell Trading.
The tournament was divided into two divisions, secondary school and tertiary. The secondary school division made environmental model cars with mousetraps to compete at the fastest speed by covering a distance of 27ft.
For the tertiary division, participating teams made robots from specified parts with the function capable of collecting wastes. The winner of the secondary division was Thomas Yu, Shatin Tin Tsung Tsin Secondary School. The winner of the tertiary division was Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Young idol singer, Miss Rain Li, the Green Label ambassador of the Green Council was invited to perform.
